I thought that was gorgeous. I was just disappointed to see that although you can swim from the US to London, you can't swim from New Zealand to ANYWHERE.

So I thought it through:

1. Can't swim to Australia (even if you wanted to...:-P) because of all the sharks.
2. Can't swim to Antarctica because you'd freeze before you got there.
3. Can't swim to New Caledonia because they speak French there, and people who don't speak French might get disoriented. Or, since you're coming from NZ, they might arrest you on suspicion of interfering with nuclear testing... (yes, yes, I know French Polynesia is in a whole different area of ocean to New Caledonia, but that's not the point.)
4. Can't swim to Fiji because New Zealanders are currently discouraged from travelling there because of the coup.
5. Can't swim to any other Pacific Islands because you might never leave...
6. Can't swim to South America because the Pitcairn Islands are in the way.
7. Can't swim to the Pitcairn Islands because they'll kidnap you as fresh blood to prevent further inbreeding.
8. ...and you can't swim anywhere else because you'd have to pass by one of those other places to get there, and it'd be just silly not to stop...

So here we are 2 months later and finally I found out how much holiday I am allowed to have this year. Unfortunately as we have lost so many members of staff and are dangerously short staffed they can't give me any unpaid leave (boo Sad ). So that means the only thing we can do is use every available day of my normal holiday...which gives us just over 6 weeks to play with.

And so that means we have to cram as much as we can into those 6 weeks........

So our current plan is to get to Australia as soon as possible (do not pass go, do not collect £200!!!). And spend 3 - 3 1/2 weeks there. Onto New zealand and spend about 1 - 1 1/2 weeks there, then come back via N. America. Making stops at Chicago, somewhere in North Carolina and New York.

Now Chicago will be to see the lovely Fae, but if she fancies a road trip we can go and meet up with everyone at North Carolina instead. But what we need is a central location that is as easy as possible for as many people that want to meet up, can. But Jezz and I don't know the area well enough to work this out, and the other problem is that time is going by ever faster and trying to work all this out is getting hard. So is it possible for a few of you that want to (Carrol, Whoosy, Bob?, and anyone else in that area) to suggest somewhere please? Chances are we'll probably make the journey by either plane or train, and aim to spend about 2 days in each location...after all this is the trip home not the holiday itself.

As for the other locations we pretty much have a rough idea of that and will post a full list of cities in Australia and NZ a little later and arrange with people then.

Right I think I've rambled quite enough!!!

I'm confused as to what you're trying to plan for the US part, is it one stop, or multiple? Either way, if you're within a dozen hour's radius of Central VA, count me in Very Happy (I assume by the time you get here, I would be back at school, but either way, I have my own vehicle to get about with, would just have to plan for work request off if its before I head back)

So would Raleigh, NC be a good city to meet up in for those near/somewhat near that area? I have NO clue where ye all are near.

Raleigh is probably the best bet. Whoosy and BB are pretty much right there (Cary, right?) I'm about an hour and a half away. And I believe Lomky and Bobo would only be about an hour and a half to two hours away. And Raleigh has a large airport, so it should be reasonable to get flights to/from RDU.

Travel from Chicago to Raleigh, NC is a good 14 hour road trip (one way).

When will this be taking place?

My wife and I will be in Seattle/Vancouver in August for a few days, then departing on an Alaska Cruise in mid August.

While in Seattle and in Vancouver, we want to see who we can there (Kasper, ScuvyCrab, CrabbyCrab and others that we know of).
I would like to catch up with Scarymuffin and PrincessJ but I’ve hit a brick wall contacting them, so they might get left off of the list.

Getting back to Space and Jezz, if we know when you may be in the area, we may try to catch up with you, but it might conflict with our plans.

Air travel with in NA is the way to go and relatively cheap, my european relatives always arrive with grandiose travel plans with a rented car and just have no clue of the scope of the distances here - they think Paris to London is far.

You know, trying to organise this is probably THE most complicated thing I've ever had to do.

We haven't set this in stone yet...but here's an outline of where and when we expect to be anywhere.

29th September (approx): leave England for Australia.
30th Sept - 7th Oct: Melbourne
8th October: head to Sydney by road
10th Oct: Reach Sydney
14th Oct (approx) leave sydney...head north.
14th - 24th ish: travel north up to Cairns...taking in all the sights.
25th Oct: Fly to New Zealand
25th Oct - 4th November: Tour NZ Porbably start Queenstown...finish Aukland (definitely stop at Wellington)
5th Nov - 10th Nov :America Possibly Chicago...then Raleigh (NC)....try to see as many people as we can.
10th : Fly to UK

That last date could do with being earlier so rather than heading home on the 10th...doing it earlier to give me time to recover before I have to go back to work. Otherwise I am going to be one very jet-lagged young pig, going back to work on the 14th November.

Does that help?

Raleigh is a 3 hour hop for Bobo and me (I just assume we'll be carpooling, since we're back at school then, and since he hasn't posted that he doesn't wanna go XD). So count me in, atleast (come on bobo, you know you wanna split the cost of gas Razz)

I too think that I will not be able to make it. My brother and sister each have a birthday in early November, and I think I will be hosting out-of-town company around that time.

Do have fun!
