Bnav...maybe a follow-up of this will be done once I've gotten Bnav down to a science.

Teal's editing part thingy
The links above don't work anymore because google moves the videos around. So heres a linky which has the list of muffin tutorial videos altogether.

Hee. Scary said oatside....

That Canadian accent's just so cute. I could just squeeze yer little cheeks from here!

Seriously though, man you're fast! I thought you must have sped it up till I turned the sound up. Maybe you added the commentary after. No? Man.

I'm usually faster than what is on the video :p

I was a bit tired...carp was giving me bad stuff...I was multitasking (focusing on talking) and camtasia was lagging me :p

All equals to a significant decrease in speed. Plus...I couldn't go TOO fast or risk leaving people behind. You'll note a few times when the video lags...that's when I'm carping faster than the recording speed (1 frame/sec).

Excellent video =D You work really quickly, I don't think I go half that speed that you have in the video. Choosing pieces with the keyboard is a great tip, wasn't aware of that option before.

I wanted to add a comment - I noticed that you work on all four holes at the same time. I found that if I concentrate on two holes at a time, I get to a masterpiece faster and thus the hammer starts shining faster too. I'm not sure if it is possible to even get a sparkle before a completeing masterpiece? (Maybe something with a grain bonus...) But anyways, while the hammer is sparkling that gives me time to get to the next masterpiece to keep it going.

Of course, the two holes that I work on are adjacent such that when they are complete, I'll get two new holes to fill.

This technique also gives me somewhere to put annoying pieces when the holes become tight.

And one last note - the hole that I try to fill first is the smallest one since these will have the least leeway for filling successfully. For me, at least, the bigger the hole, the more ways it can be completed. And then the second hole I fill is just adjacent to the one I chose to do first.

I fill holes based on the pieces I get and while following the philosophy that I should get rid of the annoying pieces first. That being said...I dont' really concentrate on any particular hole until I actually finished one, then I try to work on the adjacent ones more than the diagonal one after that.

Working on a small hole first is a good idea, but remember that sometimes the right peices won't show up...thus I work with the peices that I get to maintain that mindframe as I believe thinking about what peices you have at hand is more important.

Please note that the link to the bnav video is now in the first post of this thread. It's 40MB and about 27 minutes long.

Well done,

I enjoyed the video. I was happy to find that you use a lot of the same techniques that I do. It all comes down to a balance of offense and defense mixed with oppurtunity of shots and lots of practice. I, also, think alot of people would benefit from seeing a video of a ship in trouble and running out of moves recovering during battle. I've seen too many officers shoot the brig and get shot and wind up with both ships stalling in shooting range. The brigand will keep pumping shot in you until they finally get a token.

Can't wait for the next video.

Not sure if the puzzle details are still current, but I find these distilling videos extremely frightening.

Actually, the whole thread's pretty handy, including the step-by step picture guide for those of us whose eyes don't move that fast anymore.

Brand new to bNav and I want to thank you so much, scarymuffin!

I shall be practising, practising, practising... now that I have some idea of how to actually, you know * move * the ship -
Embarassed

I still don't know how to tell the bots where to go. What do I click/ say to do that?

Thanks again for the great bNav video.

Sandival, I think you did ask this in-game, but not quite sure whether you found what you were looking for.

You go to Vessel tab and click the bot's name... should be obvious from there on. Note: sometimes they will abandon duty for some reasons, you can keep telling them but they keep slacking. The only way around (I found out) is to switch their stations, even if it's not their best.

Based on personal experience, it's best to keep 1 carp, 1 bilge and 2 sails... if you happen to have a bot who is good in both carp and bilge, maybe you get him to work on both alternatingly, and 3 on sails (or 2 sails, 1 nav). If you can manage it, gun in battle... I cannot (and won't want my rating to fall) so I don't do it.

Btw, I was only ever halfway thru scary's video... taking ages to load the thing Sad Are there more useful tips at the end I should be aware of?

Yes, thanks andikan - I did figure it out. It became as you said - obvious.
Smile

There's something to be said for the erratic/Learner's nav style - it confuses the other side to no end (hee hee) because it completely lacks logic. We sail in the most surprising directions (to them and to me!). Starting to get a little better - at least not getting hit as much, riding the wind and using the whirlpools. Wheeee!
But we do always lose the sword fights.
Would love to have a "team!" command in there huh?

Yes I noticed they sometimes don't do as asked - just like in the real game, I guess.

Unfortunately yesterday and today, I often slowed my own puzzling to watch the Nav...will be more careful.

As far as I needed, the video was all helpful hints from start to finish, delivered (after the fact) in such a the calm way.

Dumb question # 99 - what determines how many moves you get?
