Do you battle them to swordfight or disengage?

I never got around to trying this myself during my time playing, but one problem I always had with bilge is that I can't see specific combos amidst the shades-of-blue color scheme. (Too similar!)

However, the support team did at the time say it would be ok (ie, not a problem for the anti-cheating mechanism) to recolor the image file in the YPP bilge directory that shows the pieces in bilge. Might have to try it sometime and report on how well that helps...

I'd imagine that changing the color of the images would help quite a bit...

To change the colors, I believe the following will work. Keep in mind it'll be a pain to fully recolor the 3-D images unless you're willing to be patient OR butcher the artwork a bit.

1. Open your YPP directory and go through all the media folders until you find the bilging puzzle. On windows, that's... oh, drat. Hold on a second while I open that.

C:\Program Files\Three Rings Design\Puzzle Pirates\rsrc\bundles\media\yohoho-puzzle-duty-bilge\media\yohoho\puzzle\duty\bilge

(If you installed it as other than administrator, it may be under
C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Three Rings Design\Puzzle Pirates\rsrc\bundles\media\yohoho-puzzle-duty-bilge\media\yohoho\puzzle\duty\bilge )
There we go.

2. Back up "pieces.png" in case you screw up. This is a file that contains all the pieces in one long "strip".

3. Open it in a photo editor and start recoloring, very, very carefully within the lines! Our photoshop gurus would be more qualified than me to tell you how, but I'd recommend avoiding too many clashing colors, as that would probably clash and make you squint, rather than helping you see differences.

3a. One note- I seem to recall that some files might use "indexed" color schemes to save disk space. If that's the case, change to "RGB mode" to give you more options, otherwise every color you try will probably look like mud. (You can always return to "indexed" mode after you're done editing)

4. You should probably have had YPP completely closed while doing this. Open the program and it should- in theory- use your modified file now. If not, just delete the changes and return to the old file backed up.

Remember- the whole POINT is to replace the pieces.png file. If you name anything else it won't work!

Sorry I lack the time/patience/art skills to test if this theory works, but I've got work tomorrow. Let us know how it turns out...

And if it helps, do post the modified image to share! Very Happy

First open Windows Explorer (or Finder(?) on the Mac) and go to the directory at:

C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Three Rings Design\Puzzle Pirates\rsrc\bundles\media\yohoho-puzzle-duty-bilge\media\yohoho\puzzle\duty\bilge

Make a copy of pieces.png. I like to click on it then select CTRL+C then CTRL+V.

Now Right-click the following link and select Save As.

http://designoriginal.net/ypp/pics/pieces.png

Browse to the same directory as above and overwrite the original file. You might be able to start up YPP at this point and see the new bilge images. But if you have played bilge recently, you will need to reboot your computer to clean the Java cache.

Also the original in case you want to switch back but forgot to make a backup for some reason:
http://designoriginal.net/ypp/pics/pieces.png.orig

When I was trying out different colors, the pieces that were underwater make some of the colors look too similar to each other, but I think this is a decent version. I think the biggest offender now is the "purple" color. It turns a navy shade under water.

If you have any suggestions or tweaks like me know. I actually had to reboot my computer to get it to pick up the new colors.

In the Navy, I managed Excellent then two Increds in a row with these new colors! I tend to be in the Excellent-only crowd... Also, by bilge rank went from 152 to 145 despite rancid bilging earlier in the day (Goods and even a Booched...)

Edit - I spelled overwrite as overwright... someone has been playing the ship puzzle too often >_<

Heh...that sounds like me and gunning.

Could I get confirmation that changing of the bilge colors is indeed not cheating?

ok, i tried using deeg's change first - i had to copy and paste it and then had to rename as a png file <snarl!> so, doing all that, i moved the original file and put it on my desktop for safe keeping and moved this change into the file. i rebooted and then went into YPP - my bilge puzzle was now invisible.

so, took the original and made a copy of it and played with the copy. to make the image easier to work with, i skewed it so that it was nice and large. made some very crude changes and saved it and popped it in. rebooted and still invisible.

so, i'm hoping that when i put the original back in, do a reboot, that it will all be normal again..... i like the bilge puzzle and if i have to figure out how to do this puzzle while it's invisible - i'm screwed.
